Writers Anonymous

Happy Friday Folks,

In my writers' group we always stand up, introduce ourselves and talk about the things we're working on. This past meeting I sat there thinking about how this sounds like some sort of addicts meeting. So, of course, being me, I stood up and said "Wow, this sure feels like some sort of AA meeting or something." That got a laugh.

Some of the people actually did stand up say their name and say "And I'm a writer."

So it makes me wonder...for those outside of the book publishing industry and those who aren't writers or agents or any of that, what do we all look like? A bunch of addicts? Maybe people who had a few too many cups of coffee?

Regardless, I don't think, even if I could quit writing that I would. I'm happily addicted to my craft and I plan to stay that way. In fact, I'd venture to bet the majority of us feel the same...either that or our characters refuse to leave us alone. (Others would it's our voices in our heads, but we all know those voices are really our heroes and heroines telling us we just have to sit down and write their stories right now or they aren't gonna shut up...ever).

Seriously, next to chocolate, coffee, and reading, writing is my favorite addiction. I just love making up worlds and characters and immersing myself in their stories. It's just plain what I want to do.

Who cares if we get some really odd looks when we come up with a suggestion like the Manne-Vamps I talked about in a previous post. Doesn't matter...if we weren't writing these stories what would the readers out there do? They'd be lost! People depend on us to come up with these tales. I mean, I can't even imagine a world without books. (Don't want to, either).

So, when people give you odd looks, take it as a compliment. After all, one never knows when those same people might turn around and say, "I just loved your book!"

Oh yeah and by the way...my name's Bethany, and I'm a writer.

Have A Fun Friday!

Get Thee A Nom De Plume!

Good Evening One & All, Shakespeare wrote in Romeo & Juliet, "What's in a name?...A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Disney talked about names in Aladdin in the lyrics, "Better get a nom de plume ." (the song, "One Jump"). So, for a writer, what does a nom de plume (or, pen name) say about the author? It could be a different spelling of the author's name, it could be a name that has a significance. They could keep their first name, but change the last, or change both. A pen name is also the name a writer will write under for his or her books. The name that his or her readers will recognize them. The name on the autographs and the one where people will say, "Oh yes, that's so and so, they wrote..." Some authors write under their own names. Others, for a variety of reasons, choose a pen name. What about you? Are you considering a pen name? What have you looked at when thinking of your nom de plume ? For myself, I...
