Breaking It Down, Or Road Map 2017 Edition...

Happy Monday All, Recently I've been posting on Tuesdays, but I felt like shaking things up, so I'm posting today. Back in 2010, I wrote a blog post called "Road Map" talking about tips and things toward getting published. Some of that advice still works and some of it is a bit outdated (for one thing, Nathan Bransford isn't an agent anymore) . I figured I'd give a little update since I've gotten published and talk about some of those other things that helped me get here. Let's start with the basics... Know your genre. I have a whole blog post on genres (although, it's an overview and doesn't get into every one that's available nowadays). Know your audience --this goes with genre, but it also speaks to who is reading that genre. Typically women read Romance, although, there are men out there who read Romance, too. Depending on the romance you're writing, you have to know how to tailor your story for that audience. What...

What's An Author To Do?

Happy Friday All, Recently I've gotten some questions that I want to address, but I don't want to come off harsh.  First off, let me say I sympathize with aspiring, not-yet-published authors. I've been there. I was there for years. It's hard, it's frustrating. It feels like your work will never get into the public eye. It feels hopeless and impossible. You're searching for that right combination and keep hoping someone--or something--will have the magical answer that will grant you that coveted title of "published author". Or, you're one of those authors who have queried, and queried, and queried and keep getting rejection letters and are so frustrated you don't know what to do. I've been there, too. The thing is, there's no magical potion, there's no short cut, there's no surefire combination. It truly is research, learning, growing, I don't even own a magic wand. being there with the right people at the right t...

Extensive Road Mapping

Happy Monday Everyone, Recently a found out my son's God-brother (who is in his late teens) is looking into the writing world. He says he has several ideas and he told me one of them, asking if I'd have a look at it. He's got quite an imagination and I'm interested to see where it'll take him. The conversation has me pulling together some materials to give to him to help him research the craft of writing and understand the business better. So now, I'm turning the question over to you...what would you include in resources for writing and publishing to someone? Have A Marvelous Monday!
